Description
A Sakshi Mala is a smaller set of prayer beads used by ISKCON devotees and other Gaudiya Vaishnavas as a counter for tracking the number of rounds (japa) chanted on their main 108-bead japa mala. The word “Sakshi” in Sanskrit means “witness,” and thus the mala serves as a divine witness to one’s daily chanting commitment.
Significance and Use
The Sakshi Mala is an important tool in a devotee’s spiritual discipline (sadhana).
- Counting Aid: The primary function is to help keep an accurate count of how many 108-bead rounds of the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra have been chanted.
- Accountability: It helps devotees fulfill their daily vow (vrata) to chant a specific number of rounds (e.g., 4, 8, 16) by providing a visible and honest record.
- Focus: It allows devotees to remain focused on the quality of their chanting without the distraction of trying to remember the total number of completed rounds.
- Sanctity of Japa Mala: Many devotees believe their main japa mala should only be used for chanting the Holy Name, so the Sakshi Mala is used for the separate act of counting the rounds, maintaining the sanctity of the main mala.
